Multi-Color Purge Waste Cost Calculator
Estimate the filament waste, change time, machine cost, and combined overhead added by a multi-color 3D print.
How to Use This Calculator
- Copy the color-change count from your sliced multi-color job, then enter an average purge volume from your flush or purge settings.
- Enter your filament density and price, plus model and purge tower weights from the slicer.
- Add a measured average change time, any other multicolor-only machine time, and your own machine hourly cost.
- Compare purge material cost, extra change time, and combined multicolor overhead before quoting or revising the print.
Inputs and Assumptions
| Number of color changes | Use the color-change count shown after slicing. |
|---|---|
| Average purge volume per change | Enter an average based on your slicer flush or purge settings. |
| Filament density | Use the value from your material documentation or a measured sample. |
| Filament price | Enter your actual purchase price. No live price is fetched. |
| Model print weight | Used for the waste percentage and total material cost. |
| Purge tower or other waste | Add measured prime tower, wipe tower, skirt, or other slicer waste. |
| Average time per change | Include measured unloading, cutting, loading, wiping, flushing, and restart time. |
| Other multicolor machine time | Add multicolor-only time not captured by the per-change average. |
| Machine hourly cost | Enter your own machine cost or capacity rate. No live rate is fetched. |
100-change multicolor cost example
With 100 color changes, 120 mm3 of purge volume per change, 1.24 g/cm3 filament density, a 60 g model, and a 6 g purge tower, total waste is 20.88 g and costs about $0.50 at $24/kg. At 60 seconds per change, 10 additional multicolor minutes, and a $2/hour machine cost, the extra 110 minutes cost about $3.67. Combined multicolor overhead is about $4.17, or $0.04 per change.
What Counts as Purge Waste
- Transition filament flushed when the tool changes from one color to another.
- Prime, purge, or wipe tower filament reported separately by the slicer.
- Optional skirt, wipe, or startup waste when you include it in the manual tower field.
- Model filament is kept separate so the waste percentage remains visible.
What Counts as Change Time
- Filament transport, unloading, cutting, loading, and feeder movements during each change.
- Nozzle wiping or cleaning, flushing, pressure recovery, and the restart sequence.
- One-time multicolor routines, such as extra priming or tower startup, entered in the additional time field.
- Hands-on operator time should be priced as labor in a complete quote rather than hidden in the machine rate.
Use Multicolor Overhead in a Quote
Treat purge waste as a material line and the extra change-time cost as a machine-capacity line. The combined result is still not a complete customer quote because it excludes normal model material, electricity, hands-on labor, failures, shipping, and margin.
When your main cost calculation already applies a machine rate to the full slicer duration, use this page to inspect the waste and time burden but do not add the change-time cost again.
Formula
Transition purge weight = color changes × average purge volume per change × filament density / 1000. Total waste = transition purge weight + purge tower weight. Purge waste cost = total waste × filament price per kg / 1000. Extra change time = color changes × average seconds per change / 60 + other multicolor machine minutes. Change-time cost = extra change time / 60 × machine hourly cost. Combined multicolor overhead = purge waste cost + change-time cost.
Limits of This Calculator
- Actual purge volume can vary by color pair, material, temperature, printer, and slicer profile; an average per change is an estimate.
- Change time varies by feeder, cutting and loading sequence, nozzle cleaning, flush volume, prime tower, and slicer profile.
- Machine hourly cost is not a labor rate. Add hands-on labor, electricity, failures, margin, and normal print time in a complete cost or quote calculation.
- If your full slicer time already includes color changes, do not add the same change-time machine cost twice.
- The calculator does not predict color contamination or recommend a minimum safe flush volume.
- Use sliced or measured values when possible. No printer, slicer, model file, or live price source is connected.
FAQ
Where do I find the number of color changes?
Slice the multi-color job and use the color-change or filament-change count reported by your slicer.
Does this connect to Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, or another slicer?
No. Enter the slicer values manually. The calculator does not connect to software or upload project files.
Should I include the purge tower weight?
Yes, when your slicer creates a prime, purge, or wipe tower. Add its estimated or measured weight as separate waste.
What should the average time per change include?
Use a measured average for unloading or retracting filament, cutting, loading, nozzle wiping or cleaning, flushing, and restarting the print. Keep one-time extra routines in the separate multicolor time field.
Can this change-time cost be added directly to a quote?
Yes, when it is not already included in your full print-time machine cost. Add labor separately if a person must attend the change.
